Sapphires and rubies are the gem varieties
of the mineral corundum all colors are called sapphire, except red, which
is called ruby. All have a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale of
1-10. Sapphires and rubies are tough gemstones as well, and the
durability combined with their rarity and beauty make sapphires
and rubies very desirable gemstones for a lifetime of jewelry
enjoyment. Sapphires and rubies are mined in various world locations,
each producing gems characteristic of that location. The elements
available at the time of the crystal formation in each deposit
determine the ultimate color of the sapphires and rubies. Occasionally
one deposit listed will produce a sapphire or ruby uncharacteristic
of its origin, a color change from Kanchanaburi or an unheated,
lightly saturated yellow from Burma. The special colors are noted
below, though some jewelry pieces will feature these very special
gems. The Sapphire Gallery fashions jewelry from the sapphires
and rubies produced in several locations depending upon availability
of quality gems. We try to keep corundum gemstones from many
worldwide deposits available, though certain deposits may be
represented by only a few pieces. The Sapphire Gallery particularly
showcases sapphires in jewelry from all four deposits of Montana. If you
have specific requests,we would make every effort to accommodate your
purchase choices within the bounds of availability.
